Decent Laptop but with caveats
I chose Dell even if its expensive than other brands with same spec was my past experience with Dell support which is simply great , and also the offer from “dellconsumeroffer.com” for extended warranty. I purchased laptop on 22nd, received on 25th and I claimed the extended warranty on 27th and made payment when I got intimation, and till date which is 27th Nov, the extended warranty hasn’t reflected yet.Coming to laptop, its blazingly fast with good screen, keyboard and overall build. The laptop is heavy which is understandable but the bundled 330W charger brick is literally as heavy as a brick. Its huge and weighs close to 2KG by itself. Also an i7 with RTX 4060 doesn’t even consume half of that. I had to separately buy a slim and light 240W Dell charger.About the performance and thermals, with such heavy air intakes with Dell signature vapor chamber tech, I expected it to run cool. But its always hot, with CPU above 70c almost everytime, even if we do web browsing or editing a word doc. I had tried tweaking from Alienware command center but didn’t help. This is with a laptop stand with no blockage to any of the intakes. Battery life is also strictly average at about 3 hours in balanced. In comparison, my older i7 8th Gen Dell run a lot cooler at idle as well as at full load.Update:Upgraded memory to 32GB with 2x Patriot 16GB 4800 DDR5 and works like a charm. A good improvement in overall performance too.The manual says, it supports only max of 2TB nvme m.2 on slot 2. But saw one youtube video where one guy installed 2x 4TB SSDs. I have ordered one 4TB Corsair Gen 4 nvme m.2. Will update how it goes.I tried purchasing Dell 240W slim Original charger which is actually meant for some other Dell and Alienware models. It had same voltage and pin. But laptop’s charge was slowly going down when connected. Upon rebooting, it shows as 40W charger and not a 240W one.My 10+year old Dell XPS 2011’s 90W charger seemed to work as a 90w and was able to even charge the laptop at very light load like web browsing with “quiet” mode in Alienware Control center. But within couple of weeks the charger died, maybe due to being over stressed since laptop was asking for more always. Thats brings the question. Will ever any lower wattage charger be able to work reliably with this ? And Would I be left with a 2+KG charger for a lifetime with this laptop ? There is a 330W GAN slim charger available in dell website for all Dell and Alienware laptops with 330w brick, but it costs a whooping 28k for the mere charger, which is as much as a standard i3 laptop. Now going to try USB-C 130W PD charger from Dell which is meant for Precision series laptop. Will update the outcome.
